Does any one have a good web site they use or know of that sells steel boning? I have several bodices and a corset that I need to finish boning before March.

Steel bones are called "white bone" here and you can get them in 1/4" or 1/2" widths.

Re: boning
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 11:14 AMwww.corsetmaking.com <- I've never heard a bad thing about them
I've also ordered a lot from Farthingales and have never had a problem (this was when they were only in Canada and the exchange rate favored us). Now they're in LA, too. www.farthingalesla.com/
I've ordered a lot from Greenberg & Hammer, too (I get my grommets from them). www.greenberg-hammer.com/ -

Sun, January 6, 2008 - 12:25 PMI wonder what Autumn (Dark Garden) uses as a source.

Re: boning
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 3:48 PMSeconding Greenberg & Hammer; they have always done very well by me and if they don't have it, you probably don't really need it.

Re: boning
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 4:27 PMSeconding Farthingales, LA or otherwise. I used to order from them when they were in Canada and they were always very prompt (now I just drive there...)

Re: boning
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 4:22 PMYou could also try Lacis in Berkely www.lacis.com/, or Sacramento City Dry Goods since you're in Sacramento www.saccitydrygoods.com/. They are still building their site and are open by appointment only, but JoAnn is great. She's the creator of Laughing Moon patterns which are great!!! -

Re: boning
Sun, January 6, 2008 - 8:14 PMSac city Dry Goods doesn't have corset making supplies yet. They are working on it and Lacis had boning that I have to cut to size and cap. Although one day I would love to get to that point. I don't have that much time on my hands. But thank you, I booked marked them both. It's always a great thing to find places in Sacramento that I can use or will be able to use. Thank you -

Re: boning
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 10:48 AMtry searching for "stays" at Lacis. They have 'em by length in both 1/4" and 1/2". Too bad sac city doesn't have them yet... -
-
Re: boning
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 10:59 AMagreed- Lacis does have them. I go in and get 14" flat steels when I need them at the last minute. I order my busks online and have a roll of spiral steel I cut to length.
FYI, if it matters to some, there's some weird political stuff buried on the Lacis website: lacis.com/resource.html#OTHER%20STUFF (it made a big deal to me, especially when added to my own personal horror stories when I was volunteering there) -

Re: boning
Tue, January 8, 2008 - 2:39 AMdude its _berkeley_ if you don't have some retarded political viewpoint we kick you the hell out of the city limits.
regardless, where else are you going to find a rack of costuming books that thick? -

Re: boning
Tue, January 8, 2008 - 7:25 AM*snark* yeah, well, sitting there being forced to listen to Rush Limbaugh freaked me the hell out (amongst other things)
I didn't say I didn't go there. the book selection is to die for

Re: boning
Mon, January 7, 2008 - 9:06 PMI love Farthingales!
When ever I have ordered from Greenberg and Hammer something always goes wrong with my order. I get the wrong thing or something does not show up.
Richard the Thread has some specialty boning that I have not found anywhere else. They are the most expensive though. -

Re: boning
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 10:38 AMI used to order out of this catalog that hasn't changed since 1914 except to add more stock, but then I lost the stupid thing, and now I don't know who it is. But they were awesome. 14.95 for 100 ft of 1/4 steel boning. -

Re: boning
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 10:51 AMI like to order boning by the pound (in rolls-you cut and grind and dip the tips yourself) - saves a buttload of money if you are making several or more. Greenberg and Hammer. I think they just moved, but they always answer the phone and are helpful. -

Re: boning
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 6:20 PMWould for that to happen, but don't have the time currently. I end up making my costuming in small bursts and normally only get 3-4 costumes done a year. Some years not even that. I end up working them the months between semesters. maybe some day I'll find time and energy enough to make my own. I'm sure i will be much happier with the costuming when that happens.
