Can any one point me to a source that states how long the tartan for an arisaid should be? I know it needs to be 60" wide to reach from shoulder to calf, but I have a feeling that the length has been exaggerated, much like what was discussed with the kilt. I've heard 6-7 yards and 3-4 yards, and while I'm buying six yards of fabric, I want to know if I'm getting just enough, or enough for two.

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 7:05 PMWhat specific time period are you looking at for your arisaid?
And for what it is worth, I've yet to find a specific source for length (but I haven't looked that hard in many years), just the colors used, and comments on women hiding under them in church/kirk. I used to use about 3 yards which is plenty to do what I needed it to do, but for the time period we were doing, it was completely a theatrical use (16th c., where there is no records for an arasaid, just images of women in an all encompassing fur-lined cloak). -

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 8:19 PMI'm going for the 16th century as well, for more theatrical, less accurate use. Was three yards comfortable to wear up or down, etc? i don't plan on it being too cold down here in socal, but one never knows when I'll need to sleep in church. ;-) -

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 9:04 PMI usually wore mine pinned to my shoulder and down my backside, belted, or sometimes wrapped around me on cold mornings (I am in Central CA, so sometimes it can be a little chilly at events, but only once did it snow and then I bundled into a full cloak). One lady would sometimes make hers into a bag of sorts on her back to hold things, and I think hers was also 3 yards. It was pretty comfy to wear, or have on the backside. Some ladies would pleat theirs, I usually just tossed it on and gathered it as needed.
You may want to check with your group/guild to see what they recommend for yardage, colors or type, as it has been nearly a decade since I did Scots. "Common wisdom" or new research may have changed since then. -

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Tue, January 29, 2008 - 11:21 PMThe airsaids that the group wore here in colorado were a bit longer 4 yds and they wear it like a back pack for shopping.. tied to the shoulders of the bodice with leather and belted at the waist it creates the backpack.
the 11 yard measurements are for the men who also wear the airsaid. You need at least the 9 to make the folded kilt then you need at least three extra, not only to go over the shoulder but to wrap back around to meet the top of the shoulder. I may have a pic of me in a great kilt somewhere. Ill see about posting it.

You'll have to explain this "men in arisaids" thing to me. -

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 3:06 AMThe easiest way to explain it is this. Have you every wrapped a Sari?
wearing a great kilt is similar. mostly it looks like you are wearing a great burrito.
When you grab pleats to pull over the shoulder and grab pleats to pull from the other side to meet you are creating an airsaid.
Men wearing great kilts can create the shopping basket by grabbing a set of pleats a little further over from the first set away from the bottom pull to be tied to the opposite shoulder to make the backpack as well.
If what I am carrying is small enough I can tuck it in the folds next to the sporran. but if the item is a bit larger I use the backpack. -

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 10:08 AMI have never ever heard that referred to as an arisaid, that's what I meant. I've always heard arisaids, in research and otherwise, referred to as a women's belted plaid, whether the upper layer was worn down, up, pinned at the shoulder, or otherrwise.

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 1:17 PMWow 11 yards! Our guys only used 7-9 yards and could easily use them for their backpacks at that size. They usually just wore it pinned one portion to their upper chest (one side or other), and let it cascade in folds down the back.
And I hadn't heard the term arasaid for any portion of the great kilt. Interesting. -

Re: Length of tartan for an Earisaid?
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 1:29 PMGlad I'm not the only one here. My boyfriend dresses Scot, and is 265lb, and uses an 8yard tartan for his kilt (though it's usually pleated "peacock" and not pinned up.)
