grommet tools

So I want to buy a good grommet setting tool and am hoping someone has experience with them. I'm sick of buy the cheap hand held ones at JoAnn's and having them work on only 2 grommets before it starts making the grommets all crooked and weird looking.

I am confused though. Do you have to buy separate die & hole punch for each size grommet you use? If so, what size is the most useful to start out with?

I was looking at the ones on this site...
store.corsetmaking.com/Mercha...ant.mvc

thanks in advance! & I'm going to post this question on the corset tribe too...

I use a HomePro grommet press (like the one you linked to), but before that, I used an anvil-style one.

You do need a separate die for each size grommet. The most popular grommet size is 00, followed by the slightly larger 0. Personally, I'd get this die to start with: store.corsetmaking.com/Mercha...ant.mvc but the press comes with that size (at least from Corsetmaking. You can find the HomePro for less on eBay, too.

I bought my grommet setter from here, the third from the bottom CMS-GST-HM. I love it.

Call me crazy, but I think the one at the top requires special grommets. That's what I think I remember about using it in a shop a few years ago. It's supposed to be a "punch and grommet in one step" type of deal, which I recall only worked with certain weights and thicknesses of fabrics.

The HomePro doesn't require special grommets, nor does it punch a hole in the fabric (I think there are dies which will do that, though)

i have the TEP-3 deep throat grommet press and love it.

you do need a die for each size, and special self-punching grommets.

the size i use most is "0" (3/16") ... which is bigger than most women's corsets use (i make men's corsets).

the self-piercing grommets are a great time-saver, i have only had trouble with very large grommets having trouble piercing through many layers of stretch lamé.

I use my arbor press. I made adjustments to the hammer dies so the can be attached to the press. Works like the press listed in another post but I used what I had on hand.
