new to this tribe, I come with questions...

I have recently become the Costume Coordinator for The South Island Musical Society's spring production of ," The Music Man". I live in Duncan, on Vancouver Island.
I'm hoping to find local like-minded individuals who might be interested in offering words of wisdom, or possibly nimble fingers as crunch time approaches.
As this is a musical, with lots of dancing, I'm trying to deal with the shoe situation. Most others involved with the show seem to feel everyone should be able to handle their own, but if you're familiar w/the show &/or era, you know there's not a lot of those shoes in stores right now. I can find in consignment/vintage shops for adults (it hasn't been easy) but for the children... nothing...nowhere.... this is community theatre. We've got an extremely limited budget.
I don't want to see a single pair of sneakers on that stage....
But they have to be able to dance, for quite awhile, in whatever ends up on their feet...

Cotton voile chemises/nightgowns from April Cornell

I normally just lurk around various tribes, but I found this link and HAD to share it.

www.aprilcornell.com/Product...ult.aspx

I'm not very well-versed on how period-correct the white "nighties" are -- but in my mind, they would make excellent chemises regardless. (Besides, nobody who wants to look truly "period-correct" is going to go around exposing a whole lot of chemise . . . right?)

L'anyway -- pretty things! Cotton voile! Lovely embroidery! Go ogle!

(X-posted to What to wear at the Dickens Fair!)

Buttons in the Middle Ages

I'm in the midst of making loosely period Elizabethan breeches for my fiance, when I realize I can't find my antler buttons I was planning on using. Money is an object right now, but I noticed that I do have plenty of natural colored Sculpey (a bake-to-harden clay.) I know buttons with button holes were relatively new, but what would a button made of carved bone or clay at the time have looked like?

Need help figuring out a victorian pattern

I recently made the bustle from this pattern: http://www.lafnmoon.com/saloon_girl.htm
It was real easy to understand and figure out until I got to the last few steps. Nothing made sense and I convinced myself they left a step out. I ended up making it the way it made sense to me. If anyone is familiar with this pattern and can answer my questions please PM me.
Thanks

I am begging your help as this seems like a good place to start. My beloved dog just ate most of the instructions page of a skirt pattern I was working on- Vogue 8003, a contemporary long skirt with a bustled back and plain or lace-trimmed ruffle at the bottom. It's very Victorian and I bet someone on this tribe owns it. Would someone be willing to scan theirs and send me a PDF? Please? I've tried taping, but a big chunk is missing from the middle. Thanks!

Help! Andalusian costume wearing (X-posted)

Hi all,

A friend sent me an outfiit that he says is Andalusian, but I'm not sure how to wear it. It's like a long vest that wraps under your legs and back around your body... but where? The hips? Waist? Chest? Underarms?

Anyone got a pic of this type of costume so I wear it right?

Thanks!
Tea hats

Hullo everyone.

First, as I'm new to this tribe, I feel it would be more than necessary to introduce myself. I go by Y. McLeod and needless to say, I love costumes. Unfortunately I have no skill in sewing and as our sewing machine is broken at the moment I don't see myself learning anytime soon. In any event, I do have items to put together to make costumes that are suitable for balls and other events. But enough about me. Thank you for welcoming me into your tribe, I hope to learn more about costumes than I ever thought possible :).

Now my question/dilemma : I would like to make a tea hat for a ball coming up on the 2nd of February but I have no idea how to let alone what supplies would be needed. Would I need any sewing experience? Would it be expensive?

Thanks :)
~Y. McLeod

18th Century costume events in the US?

There are a great number of Baroque festivals in Europe, like the Sonnenball in Cologne and the Lumieres event in Udine, at which beautifully costumed guests attend to enjoy 18th Century music and arts at fancy gardens and chateaus. Is there anything remotely close to this in the States? I know there are a few Victorian events like the Dickens Faire, but... where can I go in my 18th Century gowns?

Civil War shirt (trying to track down an original piece)

This is totally weird, but going to throw this out there in case anyone knows what I am talking about.

A co-worker has a relative that was in the Civil War. It was a Private Peter S. Hyde, from WV. At one point a few years back, he came across a website for SB Enterprises (the site that I have a 2 year old print out from is now defunct) that had what appeared to be an extant shirt that belonged to this soldier. There was an image, and the shirt is also referenced by Coach McCoach in this article:

http://education.articlesarchive.net/should-your-civil-war-shirt-have-a-collar-or-be-collarless.html

Does anyone know where this shirt exists? Its blue and which plaid with a blue pocket. My friend is trying to find out if its still in existance and if its on display somewhere...

Thanks!

Does anyone know how replicate the hairstyles of the women of HBO's Rome? I've got hip-length hair and wonder how to fix it like Naobi or Eirene, where most of their curls seems to be tied back in a ribbon (I think), and a few loose curls fall past their shoulders....truly beautiful!!

Delight in the clever antics of the infamous Jack Spareribs, the evening’s Master of Ceremonies, and bid on over $5,000 worth of limited edition collectibles and memorabilia. Win a raffle prize or revel in the company of Barbossa's crewmembers from the hit Disney movie Pirates of the Caribbean; Curse of the Black Pearl: The forceful Bo'sun who slapped Miss Swan - Isaac C Singelton Jr., the creepy Koehler who choked Captain Jack through the bars of his cell - Treva Etienne, and the sadistic grenade tossing Jacoby - Vince Lozano. Guests are encouraged to come dressed in their best pirate gear and enter The Best Dressed Pirate contest. 100% of the event’s gross proceeds will go to The Children’s Hospital and Research Center of Oakland.

Does anyone know of a good pattern for making a simple neck ruff? I need it for a costume I will wear for a theme night at a club, so it does not have to be historically accurate, just to give the impression.
I'll be wearing it with a corset, so some sort of fastening similar to a chocker would work best.
Has anyone made such an item before?
Would a few yards of lace drawn tight with a thred and needle work well enough?

CostumeCon 26 Historical Masquerade - Call for Entries

The Costume-Con 26 Historical Masquerade recognizes creativity, scholarship, stage presentation, and workmanship skills in the context of historical clothing. It celebrates the history of costume, including all cultures, periods, and types of dress. "Historical costume" is costume based on clothing that was worn or could have been worn somewhere in the past of this world.

The Historical Masquerade will take place on Sunday, April 27th, 2008. To enter the CC26 Historical you must be a member of CC26, as must all models you may plan to use. We are expecting to have a particularly large number of entries for this Costume-Con, as the Bay Area has so many opportunities for historical costuming. Because of that, we would like to encourage interested costumers to pre-register, even if you only think you will have a garment completed in time. You can submit a registration form, or contact the masquerade directors to express your interest. Deadline for submission by mail: April 15th, 2008 (Rules and downloadable pdf registration forms can be obtained on the Costume-Con 26 website: http://www.cc26.info/main.php?section=events&page=h_masq).

Deadline for registration at the con: 8 p.m. Friday, April 25th, 2008, but please don't wait in case we are unable to accept all submissions due to space/time limitations.

Thanks, and we are looking forward to a very wonderful historical masquerade at CC26!

Length of tartan for an Earisaid?

Can any one point me to a source that states how long the tartan for an arisaid should be? I know it needs to be 60" wide to reach from shoulder to calf, but I have a feeling that the length has been exaggerated, much like what was discussed with the kilt. I've heard 6-7 yards and 3-4 yards, and while I'm buying six yards of fabric, I want to know if I'm getting just enough, or enough for two.

Hello
I am a dancer who needs some information on where I might:
A. see photos or renderings of what a brothel worker may have worn, say 1700s-early 1900s eras.
B. learn more of the history of brothel or bordello workers
C. find out geographical info on the various types of sex trades took place in areas around the world

Any other costuming suggestions/links/photos for this type of garb would be appreciated! I know it's a vast spanse of time periods, but I am not sure yet what I am looking for exactly.
Thank you graciously

grommet tools

So I want to buy a good grommet setting tool and am hoping someone has experience with them. I'm sick of buy the cheap hand held ones at JoAnn's and having them work on only 2 grommets before it starts making the grommets all crooked and weird looking.

I am confused though. Do you have to buy separate die & hole punch for each size grommet you use? If so, what size is the most useful to start out with?

I was looking at the ones on this site...
http://store.corsetmaking.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CMS&Category_Code=GST&AFFIL=CM

thanks in advance! & I'm going to post this question on the corset tribe too...

new parasol-making book published

A friend who's a theater costumer & professor just published a textbook for one of her classes, & it's entirely about parasols. I was one of her early editors, & I'm so excited to buy my final copy with photos & diagrams!

The text is amazing -- very clear & detailed instructions on covering & repairing parasols of different types. This book should be useful to anyone who wants to recover a modern parasol to look historical or repair a vintage one.

The title is: _Sticks in Petticoats: Parasol Manufacture for the Modern Costumer_

It's available online in several formats:

full color paperback for $30
full-color download for $15
http://www.lulu.com/content/1745945

greyscale paperback for $25
http://www.lulu.com/content/1746385

Here's the "official" description:
Written as a resource for costumers and propbuilders in the performing arts industry, this reference volume contains a range of in-depth information on the design, construction, and repair of parasols. Chapters include a brief history of the parasol, step-by-step instructions on different patterning methods for parasol canopies, and suggestions for making material and trim choices. Numerous illustrations, diagrams, and photographs augment the text, and appendices include a thorough glossary of parasol component terms. Sticks in Petticoats is an invaluable addition to any costumer or propbuilder's professional library.

Hope you'll enjoy adding this to your costume books as much as I am!

Where is Quality 16th Century Clothing for Sale?

My husband has decided he wants to do 16th Century middle class as his persona. Great, that's fine, but it takes me forever to finish garb! He can be rather, um, hard shall we say on clothes, and while I love researching and creating the clothing I wear, I'm simply not willing to spend that amount of time on something for him to wear. I'd feel like I needed to follow him around with a stain stick! In order to prevent strain on our marriage *grin*, I'd rather he purchased something. Here's the problem. Neither of us wants something that is not done correctly, and we also do not need fancy brocade court wear. I want to find something simple out of a plain linen or wool that is similar to the type of clothing in the Tudor Tailor book. All of the merchants I have found either do *very* high end stuff or really cheezy stuff. They also only tend to offer the outerwear-none of the underwear and accessories that make an outfit complete. I need something like Historic Enterprises, but for 16th Century. Any suggestions?

My friend who sells corset stays got an email from a guy asking if she knew how wide the corset stays were in 1760-1840.
Because, after some reserche he found out that the native americans would use the metal corset stays and re-shape them as arrowheads. And he wanted to re-create some.
So how wide were they in that time period?

Tatterdemalion Vintage Tails Coat - More Tattered the Better!

For an absinthe theme New Years party and the Edwardian Ball, I'm looking for a very tired and old vintage tails coat or morning jacket. Black or darker tones are best and sizes between 38 and 40 are preferred, though a little smaller may do (those old folk were tiny you know!).

I WANT it to be very tattered and/or threadbare, even a bit dirty. Think early Chaplin or any number of long lost absinthe poets and bedraggled bohemians from Paris circa 1890-1910, slumped over in a filthy tavern corner and spotty with spilled spirits.

However, the coat must be mostly intact and wearable. I'm not interested in something so brittle and ancient that it'll fall apart.

Please do check those dusty old great grandparents' closets and grandiose wardrobes for something now far too worse for wear but befitting a special costume for my green fairy dreams.

Click my face and send a message with any leads. Thanks!

Men's kilts fasten on the right hip, correct? (so the front apron comes across the left hip to fasten at the right). I read that women's kilts swap sides (thus fastening at the left). Is this correct?

For those of us in the Pacific Northwest, there is a new thing in the Eugene, OR area. The website is www.costumetalk.com & they just had their first seminar, about midevil (can never spell that right) clothing. Very interesting & informative. "Bringing costume and textile scholars together for lectures on construction, history, and philosophy of costume and dress." This is what they do. Sorry I didn't post about this before the event, I only found out about it myself about 1 week before registration deadline. I think the next seminar is in April. See you there!

does anyone know of 2 people who have REALLY great 16th c. japanese samarai costumes? i am costuming a history channel special on
crucifixions with zero budget and less-than-zero time, so two reenactors for-hire with their own costumes would really save me for

bra vs corset

I'm fed up with bra's. Last year I bought some at Lane Bryant. I was glad they had some that fitted my voluptious body.
Now what do they do? They press them flat and push them down to the side. I guess by designe.
That just doesn't seem right to me. They have to be pressed together and UP.
(And also I am fed up with wearing T-shirts. So I made myself a chemise.
Looks pretty, it just needs a corset. underneath.)

Who is wearing a corset on a regular basis and would like to share some info about it? Because I have decided to switch. I'm not looking for one that give me the smallest waist in town, but something that supports and lifts.
I'm bidding on some on Ebay at the moment. I dont expect the highest quality, but so far they are cheap(er).
Later this year I will try to see if I can contact somebody who can custom make me one.

I was wondering, is there a "modern day" simple version of this. Instead of the Renfair-erotic ones.
And where do you get these?

Shoes

Here is a question of curiosity.
Early turn shoes that have been found show that they were made for left and right feet. When and why did the shoe makers start making straight last shoes. Was there a reason for this due to the change in construction methods or was it just a fashion thing? Even though my straight last shoes look symetrical I have them set left and right by the way I set the buckels.

Costume Designer needed for emerging theatre company

Butterfield 8 Theatre Company is looking for a Costume Designer.

Butterfield 8 is a small but emerging company based in the East Bay. Following the vision of Artistic Director John Butterfield, the company is dedicated to bringing fresh approaches to classic and historical works, as well as showcasing new and experimental plays and ideas.

We are currently going into production for

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

This production will feature some non-traditional casting, with a strong possibility of same-sex couples in the leading roles, and supporting roles filled by either sex, all ages, and many “body-types.” We hope to emphasize movement with both staging and costuming, and may double-cast several roles.

The show will be in production through August and September,
and run weekends in October at Cue Productions in Concord.

Future productions this season will include
The Importance of Being Earnest and Taming of the Shrew.

We are seeking a costume designer who will bring an innovative and fresh perspective, and who understands the time and monetary challenges of community theatre. This is a volunteer position, with growing exposure to the community, and great opportunity to stretch some creative wings.

If you are interested, or would like further details, please email:

Quick Notes from Strider:

As I finish up this missive to our beloved patrons and noble friends, the Sypher artists are buried in their preparations. The Elvish Water Temples and ancient forests are beginning to take shape as the glittering realms within our dreams begin to solidify. The the festivities approach so very quickly m'friends. This year our ambitions take us into the heart of Faerie, to the very boarders of the etheral trees and Oberon's Court. Baby dragons are learning to fly as nobles and faerie creatures dance. Time approaches and Sypher's Royal Court shall open its doors for a weekend of magic.

Well, time burns, promising only to burn out. Enjoy the world around you, each little detail you perceive are the brushstrokes of creation.
Upon solid soil we place these dreams and with our hands we shall forge them.

Please pardon the cross-post.

Does anyone know of a place that rents their grommet setter in SF or the South Bay at large? I've mislaid mine and have a project due right away. Laci's is out of reach for me due to their limited hours and my schedule. It would be very helpful to find someone who - like Laci's - will also sell 00 grommets as mine are probably with my setter!

I've got about a week to make 3 pair of hip buckets, and I'm thinking I'll instead do bustle pillows due to time and quantity demands-along with faire and real life getting in the way.

Has anyone made side-bustle pillows before?
What's the best filler?
Comments from Amazon.com

The Tudor Tailor - reconstructing 16th century dress (Batsford, 2006)

* 160 pages; * 80 historical illustrations, many in colour; * Over 100 specially commissioned line drawings; * 36 patterns with full step-by-step instructions and photographs showing finished garments worn by real people.

The first four chapters provide a social history of clothes in the 16th century, drawing on the latest research and primary sources such as ordinary people's wills and surviving royal records. There is discussion of the materials used, people's financial and social relationships with their clothes, and the changes in dress from birth to death. There is as much emphasis on the clothes of ordinary people as there is on high fashion. There is also general advice on choosing materials, construction methods, and an insight into the Tudor tailor's sewing kit.

Synopsis (from Amazon.com)

A valuable source book for costume designers, dressmakers and those involved in historical reenactments, this book contains all the information you need to create authentic clothes from the Tudor period. Computer-generated, historically accurate patterns enable one to make a wide range of garments, such as doublets, hose, bodices, skirts, hats and headdresses - even underwear. There are also plenty of ideas for decoration and embellishment such as ruffs, cuffs, collars, embroidery and other surface decoration. The full range of Tudor society is represented, including lower- and middle-class clothing as well as the more sumptuous costumes from the courts of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. In addition to the patterns, there are detailed drawings of each costume and information about historical context, including original paintings and source material.

Review (excerpted) from Amazon.com:

"Outstanding, well-researched, beautifully realized volume, April 20, 2006"

Reviewer: "ilka" (San Francisco, California):

“I have had this book in my possession for less than a week and I'm already beating it up, creasing the pages and getting it dirty and telling everyone I know about it.

“Ms. Mikhaila and Ms. Malcolm-Davies should be commended for the scope and depth of the manual they have created. The writing is succinct, intelligent and accessible. The book dives right in with an assessment of researching historical costume, the strengths and weaknesses of primary sources, and a thorough overview of what was being worn by whom and why. There is even a series of small line drawings (over 40) showing what was worn by the common people and the nobility, basic sorts of silhouettes to work from. The first chapters are filled with portraits, line drawings and photographs of actual clothing of the time period, including some works and pieces I have never seen reproduced in other art, history or costume volumes. There is an entire chapter on fabrics and garment creation and structure, including a table discussing the various materials.

“Amazingly, the majority of this book covers the actual pieces of clothing to be made. It starts with the foundation pieces for both genders, moves along to all the various possibilities: hose, doublets and more for men; gowns, bodices, kirtles, partlets and more for women, plus ruffs, cuffs, collars, hats, even hair -- and each one is carefully described as to the construction, with careful illustrations and actual photographs of garments during creation. "Henrician" (I have not heard such term before), Elizabethan and late Elizabethan costumes are covered in equal detail. With all due respect to Ms. Winter and Ms. Savoy, I was floored by the instructions, and I felt far more confidence in the process than I did with "Elizabethan Costuming." I am not a beginner, but my feeling is that a novice with a basic sewing background, after carefully reading the instructions, could construct any of the described garments. Has footnotes, a bibliography and a small but quality list of suppliers. There are not enough superlatives to use to describe this delicious book. I highly recommend it, would give it six stars if the rating system would let me.”
Looking for designers for our June 9th fashion show at Root Division, 17th and south Van Ness, San Francisco. We are looking for more of an eccentric-Tim Burton-costumey-couture style, historical is good too. As many pieces as you can make, but at least 2 or 3. Its going to be a 6 to midnight party with art, fashion show, circus acts and more. Shoot me an email if you are interested.

Recommendation for dress form

Hello all,
I am hoping for input on quality adjustable dressforms. I make all my patterns via the flat pattern making method. And so mainly I am looking for something that will help me when I need to hem circle skirts or cloaks etc. as well as having somewhere to set up my full costumes in the works for inspiration etc.

I would like an adjustable dress form so that If I decide to do the draping method I am ready, as well as having an easier time when doing custom orders

The best I found is the Singer® 150 or 151 Adjustable Dressform
http://www.singernj.com/singer-dressforms.html

Has anyone ever used this brand/type or have another to suggest?

Thanks so much and Happy Creating to all

Queen's dress stolen

Help! My San Francisco garage was ransacked Saturday night, November 18. Thieves stole the beautiful Queen's dress I've worn at Folsom Faire, The Revels and at Valhalla; to be more precise, they took the bodice, sleeves and overskirt.

Designed and made by Liz Martin, this unique purple (okay, aubergine) velvet confection—beaded and pearled to within an inch of its life by the fabulous women of St. Matthews Guild—weighs at least 30 pounds.

Pictures here: www.folsomfaire.com/StMPhoto...F05Q1.htm

The SFPD is looking for it. The officers who took the report say it's likely to turn up since it's so unusual; one of the officers is a Faire fan and even asked about Dickens.

As you shop Bay Area costume and thrift shops for your pleasure this season, please keep an eye out for the dress. It's tough to miss.
(Yes, we've had security issues before. I was taking the dress up to my Dad's for safekeeping at Thanksgiving. Sigh.)
Generous reward offered.

Please spread the word.

Thanks so much.

Help and save Wal-Mart's Fabric and Pattern Section!!!

Hello all,
It has come to my attention that certain authorities in the institution that is Wal-mart in all their wisdom (or lacking of)has decided to remove the Fabric and Pattern department. They want to make space for a larger party supply dept. I have found this to be a great loss for me and many sewing enthusists since Wal-Mart is now one of the few places that I can find affordable fabric and sewing supplies. Although it is said that a few stores may remain keep their fabric section, i dont think that this is going to cut it.I have been informed by a few walmart employees who shall remain nameless that the transition will be complete by the end of march or the mid april of this year 2007.It was also suggested that I call wal-mart's corperate office at 1-800-WALMART and voice your complaint about this issue. Here is a link to the online petition, but i really reccomend making a call, by flooding their phonelines, you will really get their attention.

Length for bell sleeves?

I'm a complete newbie to historical clothing, having made one dress for the Ren Fair last weekend. I took 6" off the bottom hem and was wondering how much, if any, to take off the long bell sleeves. The sleeves currently reach just past my finger tips. Is that appropriate or should the sleeves reach to the first thumb joint, as in modern sleeves? The pattern is McCall's 4492 ( http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M4492.htm?tab=costumes&page=5 )

Greetings,

Most of the European bands these days dress in a large colorful tunic with a tiny white hat with draw strings....like Wolgemut. Whelp, we want to look like barbarian/viking sorts that play monster instruments and can do battle on a whim if needed. Something a wee bit more fierce than funny.
Any ideas?
If you look at my photo collection I have a few pics here on tribe but check the one's on myspace. My costume seems to be okay but some professional help is desired. There are two pipers and two drummers.

"What," I hear you saying, "is Am I Period Or Not?"

Once upon a time a website was born on the Internet, dedicated to historical garb and based on AmIHotOrNot.com. People could upload photos of their garb, armor and accoutrements and others could vote on how faithfully it represented similar things made in the period. It became much more popular than the site manager predicted and she had to close it down because she was unable to keep up with it.

Now, years later, it's reborn under new management and with a larger staff.

There are categories for all epochs of time, from ancient Greece and Rome to the 20th century and fantasy garb. Come on over and show the world what you can do or what you have, or just look around and vote. There's some beautiful stuff there already (read: Crenach-inspired gown)!

Proper Edwardian Shirt Starch Help

I recently acquired an Edwardian long sleeve formal shirt that is in need of press and starch (I assume). See image links below.

This is a, I believe, fairly typical shirt for that time with a thicker and textured cotton "bib" and matching cuffs. The rest of the shirt is a simple plain cotton which is easy enough to just iron.

Does anyone have special advice on how I should approach pressing this type of shirt? I'm assuming that only ironing the bib will not be enough as it's quite think and fairly rumpled. Will try this though.

Thanks for any help!

Rome Costuming

I've been very impressed with the quality of the costuming on the HBO series Rome. I have to admit, that roman couture is a bit out of my area and I was wondering if anyone else out there is watching and happens to know what fabrics are being used on the tunics. There is a bit of variety but they all have a rough spun quality about them, lots of slubs and texture, but I can't identify the fabric types.

Reconstructing History Patterns

Kass McGann's pattern company is going great guns. She's just released her Golden Age of Piracy line and Tudor patterns are due out later this summer.

I've used her 1630's women's jacket and petticoat pattern (see my profile for a photo). In addition to the pattern itself, you get copious historical notes and detailed instructions for both machine and hand construction. She also has a pattern mailing list for questions, troubleshooting and plain old chat on historical clothing. Check her out at:
